Ataxia
Overview
Ataxia is a term for a group of disorders that affect co-ordination, balance and speech.
Symptoms
Poor coordination and balance; unsteady walk; difficulty with fine motor tasks; slurred speech; trouble swallowing; uncontrolled eye movements; fatigue; blurred vision.
Causes
Ataxia usually results from damage to a part of the brain called the cerebellum, but it can also be caused by damage to other parts of the nervous system. This damage can be part of an underlying condition such as MS, or can be caused by ahead injury, lack of oxygen to the brain, or long-term, excessivealcoholconsumption. Hereditary ataxia is caused by a faulty gene passed on by family members, who may or may not be affected. Read more about thecauses of ataxia.
Treatment
No cure for most types. Physical therapy; occupational therapy; speech therapy; adaptive devices. Medications: omaveloxolone for Friedreich's, muscle relaxants, gabapentin for eye movements.
Prevention
Many forms unpredictable. Preventable forms: avoid excessive alcohol, ensure adequate vitamins (B1, B6, B12, E), manage underlying conditions.
When to see a doctor
See doctor for: loss of balance; coordination problems; trouble walking; slurred speech; difficulty swallowing; sudden onset of symptoms.
