Causes

Largely genetic with multiple genes involved; can be hereditary. NOT caused by bad parenting, vaccines, diet, or infection. The term 'spectrum' highlights diverse ways autism affects individuals.

Treatment

No cure - support focuses on addressing specific challenges. Recommended: employment support; structured leisure activities; social skills training; play-based strategies. Avoid treatments claiming to 'cure' autism. Support through GPs, occupational therapists, speech therapists, schools, workplaces.

Prevention

Cannot be prevented as it's genetic. No known prevention method. Focus on early recognition and providing appropriate support.

When to see a doctor

See GP if: child shows signs like not responding to name, avoiding eye contact, delayed speech, repetitive behaviors. Adults: struggling to interpret others' feelings, anxiety in social situations, difficulty with friendships.
