High cholesterol
Overview
HEART UK has information about inherited high cholesterol that starts at a young age (familial hypercholesterolaemia).
Symptoms
Usually none (hidden risk). Visible signs (rare): grey ring around cornea; yellow patches on eyelids; skin lumps.
Causes
Fatty substance build-up in blood. Risks: fatty food; smoking; lack of exercise; alcohol; obesity; family history (FH).
Treatment
Lifestyle: low sat-fat diet; exercise; quit smoking. Meds: Statins (atorvastatin); ezetimibe; injections.
Prevention
Healthy diet (oily fish, fruit/veg, wholegrains); exercise 150mins/week; stop smoking; less alcohol.
When to see a doctor
See GP for blood test if: over 40; obese; family history of high cholesterol/heart problems.
