Overview
Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. More than 43,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK.
Symptoms
Persistent cough (>3 weeks); coughing up blood; breathlessness; chest pain; weight loss; fatigue. Recurrent chest infections.
Causes
Smoking (70%+ cases). Passive smoking. Exposure to asbestos/radon/pollution. Age 55+.
Treatment
Surgery (remove tumour); Chemotherapy; Radiotherapy; Immunotherapy; Targeted therapy.
Prevention
Stop smoking (most important). Healthy diet/exercise.
When to see a doctor
See GP if: cough >3 weeks; blood in cough; chest pain; unexplained weight loss. Urgent referrals available.
