Symptoms
Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia); persistent indigestion/heartburn; weight loss; pain in throat/chest.
Causes
Smoking; Alcohol; Obesity; Persistent acid reflux (GORD); Barrett's oesophagus.
Treatment
Surgery (remove oesophagus part); Chemotherapy; Radiotherapy. Stents for swallowing.
Prevention
Stop smoking; limit alcohol; healthy weight; treat acid reflux.
When to see a doctor
See GP if: swallowing becomes difficult/painful; persistent heartburn/indigestion >3 weeks.
