Type 1 diabetes
Overview
Type 1 diabetes is a condition where your body cannot make a hormone called insulin. This causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to get too high.
Symptoms
4 Ts: Toilet (peeing a lot); Thirsty; Tired; Thinner. Quick onset.
Causes
Autoimmune (body attacks pancreas). Not lifestyle related.
Treatment
Insulin injections/pump (lifelong). Glucose monitoring.
Prevention
Cannot be prevented.
When to see a doctor
See GP ASAP if: 4 Ts symptoms. DKA is an emergency.
